For both executive or nonexecutive roles:

  1. A resume’s goal is to secure an interview or conversation with the hiring manager.

  2. Hiring mangers or HR spends less than 7 seconds reviewing a resume.

They might read it prior to interview.

  1. Use a classic, black-and-white format. It is easier to read in 7 seconds.

  2. Avoid photo, colors, or excessive formatting; these can distract, impede the quick scan, and even lead to age bias. (Applies to all except Advertising industry.)

  3. Keep it to 2-pages, covering the last 15 years of work history (unless you’ve only worked for one company).

  4. Make the first half page impactful – you only have 7 seconds to sell you. (They may not even turn the page.)

  5. If you are over 55, do not double space between sentences. Prevent age bias.

  6. AI-generated resumes are easily recognized and becoming a common theme. This is happening at all levels – especially at the executive level. Resumes are being received with the same sentences and examples for a job title. Use caution.

  7. Education (except for College graduates) goes at the end of the resume.

  8. Avoid hyper links - 99.5% are not used. All you have is 7 seconds.

  9. References are not to be included on a resume.
